Canadians’ Opinions about How Quickly Donation Dollars Should be Used

Published July 2022

What is in this report?

This short research report shares the insights from a July 2022 study on grant-making foundations accumulating wealth in perpetuity. We review how quickly Canadians would like to see donation dollars used (instead of being accumulated in perpetuity).

What are the 3 major takeaways?

  1. Two-thirds of Canadian taxpayers feel their tax dollars, by way of the charity tax credits, should be applied within 10 to 15 years by foundations.
  2. Just 30% feel holding money in perpetuity is preferable. More Canadians (36%) prefer to see the fund used within 2.5 years. This is much sooner than what current legislation requires.
  3. What do Canadians feel the required Disbursement Quota (of grant-making foundations) should be? Above 10%.
